Photoshop Lightroom Essential Training

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

I have been using Lightroom for about 3 months and thought I knew the product fairly well until I started watching Chris Orwig’s Training DVD from Lynda.com.

Instructor and professional photographer Chris Orwig explains how browsing, organizing, and adjusting images in Photoshop Lightroom dynamically improves photo management, processing, and presentation. The training teaches photographers how to establish a more effective and creative workflow so they can focus on what it’s all about — the photo. Tutorials are accompanied by exercise files (full resolution raw files).

Lightroom 1.1 Update Available

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

The Lightroom 1.1 update has been at last posted.

New features:

  • Improved multiple computer workflow with catalog import/export functionality
  • Improved noise reduction and sharpening
  • Vista Support
  • Additional Camera Support (Canon 1D Mk III, Phase One medium format backs and more)

Update Notes:

  • I recommend backing up your 1.0 library file(in this release catalog) before upgrading.
  • The Lightroom 1.1 Readme File contains a more detailed list of new features and notes. (Who reads these?)
  • For those that tried the Lightroom 1.0 trial and did not purchase Lightroom, the 1.1 update resets the clock and provides another opportunity.
  • This update will automatically replace your Lightroom 1.0 application (You don’t need to uninstall)
  • Not sure if Lightroom is running fast enough for you? Try the Optimize option in the catalog-specific preferences.

Tethered shooting in Lightroom

Friday, June 15th, 2007

If you can connect your digital camera directly to the computer, you can import image files to Lightroom directly from the camera.

Photographs can be automatically imported into Lightroom, bypassing the need for a camera card and having to configure the Import settings every time you import a batch of images.

This is also referred to as ‘tethered shooting’ and Lightroom has the ability to do this, but Lightroom will need to rely on other software that can communicate with your camera and put image files to a specified folder location.

This way, Lightroom can be configured to automatically import these images into the library using ‘watched folders’.

CIPA has today published a draft of their new ‘Specification Guideline for Digital Cameras’. This document is intended to provide guidelines to manufacturers for the publication of specifications and features for digital cameras. It covers a wide range of details such as focal length, effective pixels, sensitivity, signal to noise ratio and even weight, dimensions and volume. Very promising specification is a distinction between mechanical (optical) image stabilization and digital blur reduction, called by some manufacturers digital image stabilization.

Some of CIPA members include Canon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sigma and Sony.

More news about Lightroom 1.1 features

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Tom Hogarty gave some more info about Lightroom 1.1 – what there will be, and what there will be not:

I can’t comment specifically on future feature timing but one of the key updates already provided in the Camera Raw 4.1 release and the next update of Lightroom is improved noise reduction and sharpening technology. A plug-in API for third party software is very important for Lightroom but will not be included in Lightroom 1.1. – TH

About sRAW support:

…the Camera Raw 4.1 readme indicates that we were unfortunately unable to include SRAW support in this release. Lightroom’s next camera support update will be identical. We will address SRAW support in a future release…

Lightroom Library Rating Shortcuts

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

Adobe Lightroom gives you an ability to organize images in your Library by setting rating to your photographs. You can do it in several ways.

First and most obvious way is to set it using mouse when you are looking at your images Library Loupe view. Just click on the star and you will set corresponding rating to the image.

Setting Rating using mouse

The other way is by using keyboard shortcuts. Select your image or look at it in Loupe view, then use 1 to 5 keys to set Rating 1 to 5 stars accordingly. After selecting use your arrow keys to move to previous/next image.

Or you can use Shift-1 – Shift 5 to set image rating 1 to 5 stars and move to next image automatically.

There is even better, undocumented way to do it. Turn your Caps Lock on and press 1 to 5 keys. You will set rating and move to next image like if you did this with Shift-1 – Shift-5.

Also you can use same key combinations for setting color labels for images using numbers 6 for red, 7 for yellow, 8 for green, 9 for blue, and 0 for purple.

Summing everything up we have following table:

Action Shortcut
Set rating 1-5 stars 1-5
Set rating 1-5 stars and move next Shift+(1-5)
Set rating 1-5 stars and move next Caps Lock, then 1-5
Set color label 6-0
Set color label and move next Shift+(6-0)
Set color label and move next Caps Lock, then 6-0
